SAFCEI will be cohosting two evening panel discussions with Earthlife Africa featuring Russian Environmentalist, Vladimir Slivyak (Ecodefense), on the dangers of nuclear power. The events will take place in Johannesburg on 16 July and Cape Town on 23 July.
Vladimir Slivyak is a recipient of the 2021 Right Livelihood Award, which is widely known as the alternative Nobel Peace Prize. Vlad is one of Russia’s most committed and knowledgeable environmentalists who has been spearheading important grassroots campaigns against environmentally damaging practices for decades. He has stopped projects related to the exploitation of fossil fuels, the use of nuclear power and coal, and the shipment of radioactive waste from abroad.
With the government's plans to build additional unnecessary nuclear power stations in South Africa, along with proposals to extend the life of the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station by another 20 years despite significant safety concerns, Vlad's visit is both timely and pertinent for South Africa.
